Ubud food festival

March 22, 2016

One of the many wonderful highlights of traveling the world is tasting the often exotic, always interesting and usually amazingly delicious local dishes of the region. This coming May 27th through 29th will highlight traditional Balinese cuisine during the Ubud Food Festival.

When you travel to Bali, the Balinese menu will often include these native Balinese dishes. Menus will mostly include meat lover’s options like ayam betutu and chicken satay.

image

If you want to know more about Balinese culture, it is important to discover these dishes. Prepare to get your mouth watering over traditional meals which are not to be missed on your next trip to Asia!

image

Ayam Betutu is a Balinese dish of steamed or roasted chicken. This highly seasoned and spiced dish is a popular dish in Bali and Lombok.

image

Ayam Satay is infused with traditional Indonesian spices like lemongrass, garlic and ginger. Similar to common chicken skewers, but a whole new level of discovery, because of the fragrant smells in Balinese seasoning and the savory peanut sauce for dipping.

If you’ve had your meat fix and want to go vegetarian, then fill up on Gado-gado. Also known as lotek, it is an Indonesian salad of slightly boiled, blanched or steamed vegetables and hard-boiled eggs. Options of fried tofu and tempeh, and lontong included. Will be served with a peanut sauce dressing.

All these dishes are easily discovered at most restaurant venues. However, there is nothing quite like home cooking, no matter where you wander. So if this option appeals to you, consider enjoying our house menu at Villa Tirta Indah. We have a personal cook and use many fresh ingredients from the garden. Of course, the most important ingredient is love!

Bali’s annual Nyepi Celebration

February 12, 2016

image

With the arrival of Springtime in Bali also begins the Balinese New Year when the Ogoh Ogoh arrive. These are paper mache representations of the dark entities which the villagers banish as they run through the streets shouting and reeking noisy havoc! The resulting celebration is finalized with a burning ritual of the effigies. Then feasting and dancing.

image

In complete contrast to the chaos of Ogoh-ogoh tradition, the following day becomes a day of seclusion. Once a year, during the first New moon in March, the usually bursting streets of Bali fall silent for Isakawarsa, the Balinese New Year.
